DIBP為常用主增塑劑之一。可作為纖維素樹脂、乙烯基樹脂、丁睛橡膠和氯化橡膠等的增塑劑。增塑效能與DBP類似，具有優良有溶解性、分散性和粘著性。 本品與顏料的可上相溶性好，可用于著色薄膜，人造革和塑料制品，本品還可作為天然橡膠和合成橡膠的軟化劑，可提高制品的回彈性。可做DBP的替代品使用。
與乙酸纖維素、乙酸丁酸纖維素、硝酸纖維素、乙基纖維素、聚氯乙烯、聚醋酸乙烯酯、聚乙烯醇縮丁醛、聚苯乙烯等樹脂相容。在水中的溶解度0.05g/L（25℃）。
